CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Education is a process—whether formal or informal—that enlightens, nurtures, and develops both the mind and body. It maximizes the use of all available resources in the most prudent way to make an individual beneficial to himself, his community, and the nation as a whole (Nwachukwu, 2015). Fundamentally, education can be seen as the nurturing and upbringing of individuals, enabling them to grow, mature, and acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that would integrate them successfully into society. As people progress in life, they learn to reason logically, show empathy, engage in productive labor, and develop themselves holistically for their personal benefit and that of the society around them. Entrepreneurs are widely acknowledged as vital contributors to the economic culture of any nation, particularly because they drive economic growth and create employment opportunities. Biology, as an applied academic discipline, is diverse in nature and provides opportunities for employment in multiple sectors for those who study it. Commonly known as the study of life, biology explores living organisms in all aspects. It is a branch of the natural sciences concerned with understanding the interactions of living things with one another and their environments. It examines biological structures, functions, development, origin, evolution, and distribution. Modern biology is founded on four key principles: the theory of evolution, genetics, homeostasis, and the cell theory. Biology is regarded as a core subject globally and is widely taught across educational levels (Pascal, 2017). Often referred to as the “science of life,” biology enriches human existence and plays a special role in Nigeria’s education system. It is introduced in primary and junior secondary levels as Basic Science and is taught as Biology in senior secondary schools. At tertiary levels, it branches into specialized fields such as botany, zoology, microbiology, biochemistry, agricultural science, and animal science. Biology contributes significantly to achieving the general aims of education, depending on how it is taught. When delivered effectively using activity-oriented approaches like inquiry-based learning, biology can play a vital role in the personal development of students. Therefore, teachers at secondary and tertiary levels should strive to produce graduates who are self-reliant and not dependent on government jobs. This can be done by fostering creativity, innovation, productivity, and entrepreneurial mindsets among students. However, the current methods of teaching biology often fail to accomplish this goal. Thus, this study aims to investigate how motivation influences students' willingness to engage in biology-related business ventures after graduation in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State. 1.2 Statement of the Problem Today’s organizations operate in an environment that is rapidly changing and increasingly complex, requiring all aspects of management to be reviewed and adapted continuously. Entrepreneurship education plays a key role in equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully manage business ventures. It encourages individuals to take calculated financial risks while making effective use of available human and material resources to pursue the goal of establishing biology-related businesses. According to Ezeudu (2018) and Omoifo (2018), entrepreneurship education in biology involves training individuals to recognize business opportunities and equipping them with the insight, confidence, and practical skills to act upon these opportunities. This form of education also imparts socially relevant skills, preparing students with a foundation in entrepreneurial knowledge that they can apply after graduation. Hence, this study intends to explore the role of motivation as a determining factor in students’ decisions to pursue biology-related business ventures upon graduation in Aninri Local Government Area, Enugu State. 1.3 Objective Of the study The general objective of the study is to examine the relationship between motivation and students’ pursuit of biology-related businesses after graduation in aninri local government area, enugu state.
