CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The transformative power of communication in effecting social change is undeniable. We currently live in what is widely described as the information age—an era characterized by the widespread influence and indispensability of mass communication channels such as television, radio, and print media in facilitating societal development. Among these, radio has been identified as the most effective medium for reaching rural populations and advancing community development. This effectiveness stems from its wide reach, portability, and cost-efficiency, all of which make radio uniquely advantageous over other forms of media. In recognition of this, governments in the present democratic era have made concerted efforts to incorporate rural communities into national development agendas. These efforts are focused on bringing governance, policies, and developmental initiatives closer to grassroots populations (Anaeto, 2020).
Radio serves as a powerful vehicle for delivering entertainment, information, and educational content aimed at promoting rural development. Such communication through radio is intentional and targeted, often described as purposive communication, because it is designed to mobilize listeners towards collective action. Particularly in the context of developing countries, radio stands out as the most affordable and cost-effective mass communication tool. It is also highly adaptable, capable of broadcasting in multiple local languages to accommodate diverse linguistic groups. For example, radio broadcasts can be tailored to resonate with specific audiences by transmitting messages in their native languages, thus enhancing accessibility and comprehension (Ashraf, 2017).
This study, therefore, aims to assess the effectiveness of radio as a medium for grassroots development and to evaluate the extent to which it has achieved its communication and development goals. The socio-economic progress of rural communities is closely linked to the flow of information between media institutions and their audiences. For sustainable development to occur, it is crucial that rural dwellers are consistently informed about developments in urban areas. Since they cannot physically be present in cities, radio becomes an essential channel for bridging this information gap. The primary goals of radio broadcasting—informing, educating, and entertaining—are instrumental in fostering a sense of participation among rural populations and encouraging them to engage in shared activities with their urban counterparts (Banjade, 2017).
This underscores the importance of effective communication in achieving development objectives. It is widely acknowledged that individuals are more likely to be mobilized when exposed to consistent and purposeful communication. Indeed, radio broadcasts serve as the heartbeat of any well-informed and active rural society. Its significance and functional role are indispensable when discussing the overall development of both rural and urban areas. In light of these observations, this study seeks to explore the impact of Island Radio 100.5 FM on the Amassoma community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The exponential growth of radio stations in recent years has sparked debate about whether these platforms are genuinely serving the public interest or primarily catering to advertisers and profit-driven proprietors. On one side of the argument, some critics assert that radio content is increasingly saturated with Western cultural influences—particularly music and commercial advertisements—that overshadow locally relevant and development-oriented programming (Buckley, 2016). Conversely, proponents argue that radio has successfully brought government initiatives and policies closer to rural populations, thereby raising awareness about grassroots development, governance, and both national and global events.
Community radio stations, in particular, play a crucial role in advancing grassroots development by amplifying local voices, encouraging public participation, and addressing issues that are specifically relevant to their communities. Despite the acknowledged value of community radio in promoting development and effective communication, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding its precise impact on grassroots initiatives. Existing research has shown that community radio can foster civic participation and empower marginalized groups (McQuail, 2010; Servaes, 2015). Nevertheless, questions remain about the extent to which these stations effectively address the unique needs of local populations and contribute to socio-economic advancement.
Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the specific impact of Island Radio 100.5 FM on the Amassoma community, with a focus on understanding its role in facilitating grassroots development and community empowerment.
