As of 2024, poverty remains a critical challenge in Nigeria. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS, 2023), approximately 63% of the population—over 133 million Nigerians—live in multidimensional poverty, experiencing deprivations across health, education, housing, and income. Rural areas account for the largest share, with over 70% of rural dwellers considered poor, compared to about 42% in urban regions. Gender disparities are pronounced: women, particularly in northern Nigeria, face higher poverty rates due to limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities (World Bank, 2023). Youth unemployment and underemployment also contribute to rising poverty levels, with an estimated 53% of young people affected (NBS, 2023).
